Kehler In Puerto Vallarta, waiting for the big storm

By Matt Rocheleau BostonGlobe.com

The beach was deserted as the storm steamed toward shore. Larry Kehler was hoping it would only sideswipe the pleasant resort town.
The beach was deserted as the storm steamed toward shore. Larry Kehler was hoping it would only sideswipe the pleasant resort town.

Normally, Larry Kehler and his wife, Cheryl, would be slicing pizzas and pouring beers for friends and tourists in their restaurant a couple of blocks from the shores of the scenic resort town of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

“We’d just be running our bar and partying,” said Kehler, who goes by the moniker “Señor Fox.”

It is with sadness that we say farewell to our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother Betty Dueck (nee Kehler).

She slipped away peacefully on Thursday, October 1st, 2015 with her family at her side. She was born on Friday, February 13, 1931 in the R.M. of Hanover to David S. and Helen Kehler. She was pre-deceased by her husband Gustav, her father, mother, one grandson and six brothers.

Memories of Kehler Cuisine

From time to time, when meeting new people and an introduction is made, the first question that will pop up is “from which Kehler family are you?” After having answered their question of who my father and grandfather is, oft times, the next question asked is “any relation to ______? ”

That blank will sometimes be Jake from the Husky Station. Followed by, the age old question of “Is it true that Jake and Edgar (Edgar’s Diner) were brothers? Jake would always deny it, while Edgar claimed they were brothers!” Since both brothers have passed on, for the record, they are brothers!   From there the conversation usually turns to the great food Edgar had, back in the day — and his famous Veal or, as Edgar pronounced it — ‘wheel’  Cutlettes.

Edgar’s wife, Helen, has continued to market Edgar’s Veal Cutlettes. If you are passing through Steinbach, pick up a box of frozen Veal Cutlettes , complete with sauce, at Main Bread & Butter, 253 Main Street, Steinbach, MB.

Taste the Kehler flavour, as you once knew it!

A longtime Kehler business in Steinbach will soon be demolished. Jake’s Husky, on Highway 12N at the Loewen Boulevard corner will cease to exist, after Husky Oil made a final decision to close down operations of the 60 year old business. Jake’s Husky Service was started in 1955 by Jacob Stoesz Kehler, and has been a family owned business ever since. Many Berliner Kehlers and Steinbach area patrons alike will recall fueling up at the corner location. While the business was built on auto repairs, it was a busy gas bar with over 100,000 litres of gas sold in a month, in its’ prime. Continue reading “Jake’s Husky”

Ich bin ein Berliner!

Recently in watching their latest movie, Muppets Most Wanted, I chuckled as I heard the line, “Ich bin ein Berliner”. Who’s line is this anyway? The Muppets,  President John F Kennedy, or Jacob Kehler? It prompted a deeper thought, what does it really mean to be a Berliner (Kehler)? Continue reading “Ich bin ein Berliner!”
