Memories of Kehler Cuisine

From time to time, when meeting new people and an introduction is made, the first question that will pop up is “from which Kehler family are you?” After having answered their question of who my father and grandfather is, oft times, the next question asked is “any relation to ______? ”

That blank will sometimes be Jake from the Husky Station. Followed by, the age old question of “Is it true that Jake and Edgar (Edgar’s Diner) were brothers? Jake would always deny it, while Edgar claimed they were brothers!” Since both brothers have passed on, for the record, they are brothers!   From there the conversation usually turns to the great food Edgar had, back in the day — and his famous Veal or, as Edgar pronounced it — ‘wheel’  Cutlettes.

Edgar’s wife, Helen, has continued to market Edgar’s Veal Cutlettes. If you are passing through Steinbach, pick up a box of frozen Veal Cutlettes , complete with sauce, at Main Bread & Butter, 253 Main Street, Steinbach, MB.

Taste the Kehler flavour, as you once knew it!

Taunte Marie

Maria S Kehler
Maria S Kehler

Although I am not much of an educated historian, it appears to me that today’s Berliner Kehler family does not have a great deal of information about Maria S Kehler (Taunte Marie).  Perhaps the greatest challenge lies in the fact that she died at an early age of 23, in childbirth of her twins, Jacob and Heinrich on February 21, 1909. Maria’s only daughter Anna Ethel Kehler Penner was one and a half years old upon her passing, and Tante Marie’s husband Abram (Abraham) Henry Penner remarried but passed away 10 years later, from Typhoid Fever on November 19, 1920 in Medicine Hat, AB. Canada Day!

Today, July 1, 2011 Canada celebrates it’s 144th year since Confederation. While Canada Day celebrates the events that occurred on July 1, 1867, when the British North America (BNA) Act created the Canadian federal government, the Kehler Clan can celebrate this day for another reason.

Ebenfeld, Manitoba

As the fourth, fifth and sixth generations of Berliner Kehlers are making their debut on this earth, there is the challenge of raising these kids to not only respect and honor Berliner Kehler and the early pioneers, but to also educate them. To help them understand where they came from, and to give them a glimpse of the challenges and hardships Berliner Kehler and his family faced. Today, we have incredible hindsight.   To quote Al Reimer – “Hindsight is never blindsight”. Continue reading “Ebenfeld, Manitoba”

Hello, Mr. Keller . . .

Brad Kehler

It is dinner time at the Kehler residence, and the conversation around the table is in full swing. Exciting news of the day is shared by all. At times it sounds more like a chicken barn, as it seems everyone is talking at the same time.

Suddenly the phone rings and the conversations come to a complete halt as the one who is nearest the phone answers promptly. Who can it be, the others sit in wonder?
