An Unclaimed Gift

Each year, parents and children, both young and old make a sacrifice to purchase Christmas gifts for the ones they love. These gifts are wrapped in beautiful packages and laid underneath the tree. Excitement builds as Christmas Day approaches, and those who have made sacrifices are anxious to watch as loved ones and friends open Christmas presents. Continue reading “An Unclaimed Gift”

What a Gift!

What’s a Kehler Christmas in the eyes of this child?

As long as I can remember, Christmas was a special time of year. The smell of baking often jogs my memory of a child’s meaning of Christmas. Grandma Kehler was always in the kitchen, when you came to visit the Kehler grandparents, for Christmas. The smells of cookies, plumi moos, Borscht and freshly baked buns were ever present. Since food was such an important part of my Mennonite heritage, the variety was endless. You were never sure what you would indulge in, as the food tables at some of these Kehler gatherings were endless. Who would notice how many cookies we ate? Continue reading “What a Gift!”

The Spirit of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving, as I remember while growing up at our place, that it was a very busy time of the year…

Thanksgiving, as I remember while growing up at our place, that it was a very busy time of the year, and not affording us much time to admire this beautiful time of the year, when the leaves turn to such glorious shades and colors for our eyes to marvel at.

Our whole family would be in the midst of processing thousands of chickens and turkeys for the Thanksgiving and Christmas tables.  For our own dinners however, we seldom had turkey, but most times it was a roasted goose, stuffed with “bubbatt” dressing and all the trimmings that provided a great feast for our very large family who made it home for Thanksgiving. Former Ebenfeld School to be Moved

Former Ebenfeld School & Ham Dog House

There is a lot of history at the corner of Highway 52 and Centre Street North in Mitchell.

The half-acre or so of land on the west side of Centre Street North is the location of the popular Ham Dog House, but that building wasn’t always a restaurant, it was originally built as a school house to provide local children with education.

Over the years it has been a gathering place for the people of the community, but now there are plans to move the building for the development of a condominium complex. Continue reading “Former Ebenfeld School to be Moved”
