What’s a Kehler Christmas in the eyes of this child?
As long as I can remember, Christmas was a special time of year. The smell of baking often jogs my memory of a child’s meaning of Christmas. Grandma Kehler was always in the kitchen, when you came to visit the Kehler grandparents, for Christmas. The smells of cookies, plumi moos, Borscht and freshly baked buns were ever present. Since food was such an important part of my Mennonite heritage, the variety was endless. There is a lot of history at the corner of Highway 52 and Centre Street North in Mitchell.
The half-acre or so of land on the west side of Centre Street North is the location of the popular Ham Dog House, but that building wasn’t always a restaurant, it was originally built as a school house to provide local children with education.

Eva Schellenberg (nee Kehler), 78, of Steinbach, passed away Friday, May 31, 2013 at the Bethesda Hospital. Eva leaves to cherish her memory five children: Lorraine (Charles Koop), Bob (Sylvia), Helen (Bill Briggs), Joan (Norman Poetker), and Tina (Andy Goossen) as well as fifteen grandchildren and their spouses and fourteen great-grandchildren.
