Ebenfeld, Manitoba

As the fourth, fifth and sixth generations of Berliner Kehlers are making their debut on this earth, there is the challenge of raising these kids to not only respect and honor Berliner Kehler and the early pioneers, but to also educate them. To help them understand where they came from, and to give them a glimpse of the challenges and hardships Berliner Kehler and his family faced. Today, we have incredible hindsight.   To quote Al Reimer – “Hindsight is never blindsight”.

As we continue on this journey, we have to answer the first question, where is Ebenfeld, Manitoba?  Ebenfeld was the area west of Steinbach, on the north side of the present day Highway 52, the closest community Mitchell, Manitoba.  Jacob “Berliner” Kehler moved his growing family to a farm here in 1891, where he began to build barns and buy livestock.

The map below, shows where Berliner Kehler’s Homestead was located in Ebenfeld as well as the cemetery at Hochfeld where the Berliner Kehlers were buried.
