John Schroeder Neufeld born on September 30, 1934 in New Bothwell, MB, passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at the age of 81 years at his residence in New Bothwell, MB.

CMC Heritage Project at Randolph, MB

In the 1870’s Mennonites, known as Die Mennonitische Gemeinde zu Chortitz, came to Canada from Russia and landed at the junction of the Red and Rat Rivers (near present day Ste. Agathe). From there, they journeyed east and built their first church at Chortitz (present day Randolph) and established a cemetery where today, over 400 people are buried.

Agathe).  From there, they journeyed east and built their first church at Chortitz (present day Randolph) and established a cemetery where today, over 400 people are buried.

Interest has been expressed in restoring the cemetery and preserving it as a heritage site.  In the same way as the Israelites took stones from the riverbed to recall the crossing of the Jordan into the promised land for future generations, this cemetery is a reminder to many of their spiritual heritage.  In October 2009, the CMC Ministerial approved its designation as a Heritage Cemetery. January 24, 1994 at 1pm, with her family at her side, our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Lizzie Dueck went to be with her Lord and Saviour after a lengthy battle with a blood disorder.

Lizzie was born in Halbstadt, now known as Shakespeare, September 8, 1915. She was the third of 11 children born to Aron and Elizabeth Kehler.

At the age of nine she moved with her family to Stuartburn where the family farmed and her father worked as a carpenter. At the early age of 11 years, she went to work as a child care worker and housekeeper and for the next few years worked for Rev. Johann Schultz Kehler: self-taught veterinarian; born on 5 May 1894 in Steinbach, Manitoba, to Jakob K. “Berliner” and Elizabeth H. (Schutz) Kehler. He was the sixth of 13 children in the family. Johann was baptized on 21 May 1918 in Chortitz, Manitoba. On 20 November 1921, he married Anna U. Wieler (1901-1991). The couple had 11 children, one of whom died young.
